JERVIS COTTONBELLY

Why Can Not We Be friends?

‘Gentlemania’ has treaded lightly into Vermin’s path – Will anyone help Jervis Cottonbelly?

Jervis Cottonbelly has been treading lightly (and accidentally) into Vermin’s unholy path since joining the roster of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood.

Jervis debuted on what, arguably, was the biggest day in Vermin’s history – the day they captured all of the gold in CWFH. It was a day when all eyes should have been on Vermin, yet a fair amount of that attention was stolen away by the debut of one of the more unique wrestlers in the history of the industry…and you don’t steal from Vermin.

Soon after his debut, Jervis was taken under the collective wings of both “Pretty” Peter Avalon (PPA) and Hobo. The two trained him to be more ‘fierce’ in his in-ring battles. Problem was both PPA and the Boxcar Superstar were sworn and bitter enemies of Vermin…and you don’t become friends with Vermin’s enemies.

It wasn’t long before Mr. Cottonbelly found himself scheduled for a pair of singles matches with members of Vermin. Though Cottonbelly came up just short in both contests, he very nearly won both. Lapses-in-judgment by Jervis allowed victory to slip away on both occasions. The victories would be described as ‘embarrassing wins’ for the members of Vermin…and you don’t embarrass Vermin.

In a show of friendship, Jervis agreed to tag team with his friend PPA in a battle against Vermin. After the match concluded, Vermin attempted to exact revenge on PPA for knocking out their leader Yuma, but Jervis stayed to protect his friend. This backed Vermin even further into a corner…and you don’t corner Vermin.

Jervis’ accidental feud with Vermin caught the attention of Vermin’s most-hated rivals of all – the owners of CWFH, the Marquez family. Nikko Marquez designated Cottonbelly as the leader of the anti-Vermin offensive and Cottonbelly set out to find compatriots in his struggles.

Cottonbelly started with a strong team – pairing with Los Primos Rivera and JR Kratos against the full ranks of Vermin (Joey Ryan, Ryan Taylor, Kevin Martenson and Bad Dude Tito). But, things quickly fell apart.

12747376_993866577372853_1831317077292248453_o

Kratos’ and Tito’s hatred for one another caused them to brawl into the locker room before the match could conclude. Vermin then isolated and decimated Danny Rivera. Rivera and his cousin quickly realized they had little to gain by feuding with Vermin, so they abandoned Cottonbelly. Ever the competitor, Jervis stayed to fight with Vermin and lost badly…because you don’t fight Vermin alone.

Undaunted, Cottonbelly again scoured the locker room for assistance. Yet again, it seemed like he had found it. He and his new partner, Douglas James appeared to be firing on all cylinders as their new team faced the same Los Primos Rivera that had abandoned Jervis a week prior. In the closing seconds of that match, with victory seemingly in-hand, a cell phone call drew James away from ring and Jervis was left alone again. And Jervis lost. Again.

The battles, the disappointments, the abandonment…the Vermin…it all has to be taking a toll on Jervis Cottonbelly. He must know that Gentlemania alone will not be enough to exterminate Vermin. As such, Jervis has promised to journey beyond the locker room walls, to scour the seas, to search the air, to ride the rails and to walk the highways until he can find a partner in his most-good of fights.

Will Jervis Cottonbelly ever find a partner he can count on? Or will this be the end of ‘Gentlemania’ as we know it?

Avalon’s Belt Has Been Taken; Is His Title Next?

Avalon’s Belt Has Been Taken; Is His Title Next?
One week after pinning the champ, Sasha Darevko has stolen the Hollywood Heritage Championship

If there’s one thing the fans at the Oceanview Pavilion are not accustomed to seeing these days, it would be Pretty” Peter Avalon without gold around his waist.

Make no mistake about it – the oft-decorated star of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood is still very much the reigning and defending Hollywood Heritage Champion. But the gold, itself, lies in the clutches of Avalon’s latest nemesis – self-proclaimed Russian “SuperTsar”, Sasha Darevko.

Their feud began when the champion joined CWFH commentators at ringside to watch the Percy Pringle III (PP3) Cup. On his way to the ring to compete, Darevko stopped in front of Avalon to menacingly point at the Heritage Championship belt. Avalon dismissively waved off Darevko. It would be the first time Avalon ignored the Russian’s warning about his intentions to come seeking the title.

Darevko may have looked past his own PP3 match, though, as he suffered an embarrassing defeat to his own signature ‘chain shot’. As Sasha sat up, his dazed eyes narrowed and focused into daggers, but not at his opponent. Instead the seething Russian glared ominously at the champion and at his belt. Avalon failed to take notice; however, marking now the second time he would look past a Darevko warning.

Two short weeks later, Sasha was done pointing and staring. He opened the show with a blisteringly blunt interview in which he told Avalon that he was coming for him and that the champ had better watch his back. Avalon’s attention was elsewhere, though, as CWFH’s proud, fighting champion focused himself on his title defense in that evening’s main event. This would be the third and final time he would be able to ignore Sasha’s threats.

Avalon won the evening’s main event in his typical impressive fashion, but his arm scarcely reached sky before Darevko struck and, as promised, he struck from behind. The Russian used his trusty chain to administer a devastating beatdown, so blind and so dirty that Avalon had to be told the identity of his assailant after the match. Sasha had the champ’s attention now.

After leaving Hollywood Heritage Champion “Pretty” Peter Avalon laid out a few weeks ago, ‘SuperTsar’ Sasha Darevko gets a non-title match on this week’s episode of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood!Tune-in Saturday at 4PM on KDOCTV Los Angeles / KOFY-TV San Francisco and 12AM EST/9PM PST on Youtoo America!

The following week, Avalon delighted at his chance to get his hands on Darevko in non-title action. In the late stages of an evenly-matched contest, Derevko fell to the mat clutching his knee. The frustrated champion maintained his sportsmanship and let CWFH officials examine his opponent, despite vocally expressing his suspicions over the authenticity of Darevko’s injury.

The champion’s instincts were sharp. As soon as Avalon turned away from his opponent for a split-second, the challenge abandoned his ruse and struck Avalon hard and rolling him up for a pinfall victory that was every bit as dirty as it was shocking. Fake injury or not, the message was delivered: Darevko had pinned the champ.

The following week, Avalon was granted another shot at revenge as he teamed with Television Champion James “Main Event” Morgan against Derevko and his comrade-for-a-day Todd Chandler. Again, Avalon seized a late advantage and again, Darevko resorted to dirty tricks. This time, the Russian abandoned Chandler to battle both Morgan and Avalon as he darted over to the timekeeper’s table, stole the Heritage Championship and escaped the Oceanview Pavilion before the match concluded and long before the belt’s rightful owner, Avalon, noticed.

While it remains clear that PPA can match the Russian SuperTsar in in-ring competition, Darevko’s mind games, dirty tactics and sadistic ambitions have successfully given the challenger the advantage. Now, Darevko holds the belt, but not the title. If the exasperation on Avalon’s face was any indicator, it may not be long until Sasha is the rightful owner of the belt he now possesses.

Will Peter Avalon reclaim what is rightfully his, or has he already worn the Heritage Championship for the last time? Tune in next week to Championship Wrestling from Hollywood to find out!

Exclusive Interview: A Family Affair

NicolasNoelMarquez

David Marquez has always said Championship Wrestling from Hollywood is a family business. He’s always considered the people who work with him on his long running television pro wrestling promotion a part of his family, but last month his statement became much truer with the introduction of his two son’s, Nicolas and Noel. At a recent CWFH taping, we caught up with the trio and conducted this Q&A.

CWFH: David, what made you decide to bring your actual family into the wrestling business?

DM: Well, it’s not like they’ve not been involved, you know that Nicolas has been on the administrative side. He’s been working with side by side with our Talent Relations Producer Michael Coughlin on travel, accommodations and payroll. Noel on the other hand isn’t exactly new to working within the operation either. About a decade or so ago, he served as a timekeeper for several events, but now that he’s older and a college graduate I asked him to come aboard full time (that was the Summer of 2014) and since these two have been around more often they’ve pitched a lot of new concepts, we even executed one…the www.patreon.com/unitedwrestling subscription video service.

CWFH: Which one of you want to go first?

Noel: He always goes first, he’s the oldest.

Nicolas: I do?

Noel: Yes. You do.

Nicolas: Alright, I guess I’ll go first.

CWFH: Did you always want to work with with your father?

Nicolas: Yes and No. I mean when I was younger I wanted nothing to do with pro wrestling. I remember him being very grumpy dealing with the international wrestling community and I told myself, no way! Then when I was old enough to get my first job, I kind of took the same path as he did. I accepted a position with the Walt Disney Co., and in the same department! Early on I thought it was just a job, but as time went by I worked closely with people who worked with Dad. I learned how much these people respected him and that’s when I started to understand what he was always talking about, building something, CWFH is his Disneyland. From that point on all I wanted to do was work with Dad anyway I could.

CWFH: Was it difficult for you working with the same people that worked with him?

Nicolas: At first yes, but that company is so big its pretty easy to make your own way. I don’t know if any of you know this about Dad, but he’s a Disneyland Legend!

CWFH: Noel. same question.

Noel: For me yes! I always wanted to be in the family business. I always enjoyed going to work with Dad. My favorite days being at the office were editing days. When he would do the post production of the television shows. Back then it was called the ‘Wrestling Showcase’ and he did the commentary with current CWFH lead announcer Todd Keneley. I was amazed how it all came together. I remember I once asked him if I could operate one of the cameras and him being him he said yes.

CWFH: WOW! That must have been an amazing experience?

Noel: Actually it wasn’t. You see, I had no business being on the camera (and I think he knew that), but he always encourages us to try new things. Well, I was on the hard camera (the most important one) and didn’t do a good job because during the course of that TV taping I had him in my ears. You see, he’s not only boss, he’s also the TV director, directing the entire show. That was not a fun 4 hours and I never asked to do anything technical again. The timekeeping he mentioned was pretty cool though. I got to sit ringside, but even then I would get caught up in the action versus doing my job. I heard about that too!

CWFH: Who’s idea was it for the subscription video service?

Nicolas: Both of ours actually. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the office or the house, but they’re both cluttered with videotape. The company has been shooting wrestling television since the late 1980s and Dad has all of it. I remember asking him why he’s not monetizing the library and his answer was pretty typical, “who wants to see that old stuff” he said. So, we started to archive the footage and we found some pretty good stuff. Noel looked into the best way to distribute the service and together we made the pitch to the team.

DM: I must say I’m impressed with the response to the service. At time I am stuck in the forest, too close to everything. I’m glad they talked me into providing it to the public and enhancing all of our social media actually.

Noel: The new online and digital media things we are doing is not just us. I brought in Jonathan King. He’s a friend of mine who comes from the music industry.

Nicolas: He’s good!

DM: Yes he is good. I’m happy he’s (finally) taking us out of the 90s.

CWFH: So what’s next?

Noel: Getting rid of Vermin.

DM: (Laughing) Although that is important, I’m usually working on a lot of things and not just within pro wrestling.

Noel: (Interrupting) But Dad, you need to take them serious. Yes this is pro wrestling, but you can’t “Disney” this and wave a wand. They mean business.

DM: I’m aware Noel. As I said on television, that is a part of the reason you’re here. Now to answer your question; Nicolas has been in the office for a few years and I believe he understands the operation. I’m hoping to make him Match Maker soon and Noel is headed international soon. His first location he’ll be headed to is Mexico because he has a real love affair with Lucha Libre.

Noel: Yes I do. When done right, its beautiful to watch. Years ago, Dad was heavily involved in Lucha and I’d like to see that back on our programming.

CWFH: That’s exciting! Nicolas, how do you feel about the CWFH Match Maker position?

Nicolas: If that’s where he wants me, that’s where I’ll go. In the first few years of the show, I was assigned to Jon Ian (CWFH Match Maker, 2011-2013) and I learned a lot about how to format a card, how to negotiate and how to feel what the public wants.

CWFH: You do realize that is an on-camera role?

Nicolas: (Laughing) C’mon! I’m his kid! I think I can get through a television segment in one piece.

CWFH: That’s true, David has been around some of the biggest, nastiest names in pro wrestling and hasn’t been physically harmed.
[At this point David was being called away to attend the pre-show production meeting]

DM: I’m sorry we’re going to have to cut this short. I want the people to know that I’m more excited about the future of both CWFH and United Wrestling Network now than ever before. I’m secure these two boys are focused on their assignments and will execute them with pride and to much success. I can’t thank the public enough for the years of support, but as the Chairman once said “…the best is yet to come”.

CWFH: Thank you all for your time.

Nicolas: No, thank you.

Noel: You’re welcome.

The Vermin Solution

By: Grant Baciocco

The problem is clear. As much as we hate to admit the truth, Vermin is now in an incredible position of power. They hold all the Championships in Championship Wrestling from Hollywood and, because of this, they have been able to force Dave Marquez to lift “The Vermin Rule” putting the entire roster in danger of out of the blue attack by these pieces of garbage.

Now, I am not a wrestler, so I can’t step into the ring and take the fight to Vermin directly, but I have been doing a lot of thinking about some possible solutions to the Vermin Problem. Here’s what I’ve come up with.

1. THE FORMER CHAMPIONS SOLUTION

IMG_0325

This is the most immediate solution that comes to mind. The former, recent, CWFH champions must band together as a unified force to run Vermin out of Hollywood. The Hobo, Scorpio Sky and PPrAy need to group together as one and reclaim what is theirs. We’ve seen signs of these four men working together in the past, but it seems as if they never fully commit to the idea. I believe the main hurdle in this scenario is that you have just a huge clash of styles that aren’t gelling together properly. The Hobo’s brawling, Scorpio Sky’s technical superiority and PPrAy’s fun loving but lighting fast offense seem to mix well on paper, but combining these different elements in the ring is a completely different matter. So far it has yet to happen, but I’m still holding out hope.

2. THE REVOLUTION SOLUTION

revolution

Che Cabrerra and Sacha Darevko are two of the most dominating wrestlers in Championship Wrestling from Hollywood. Their combined power and, frankly, underhanded tactics in the ring make them feared opponents for anyone to be standing across the ring from. They are definitely more powerful than many of the members of Vermin, but can they get the job done? I think it’s possible, but unfortunately, I feel Revolution might be too busy trying to bring their own Revolution to fruition to worry about Vermin. Also, as of late, it seems there might be a bit of a divide between Che and Sacha and that’s something that would definitely need to be worked out before they were to face Vermin. Mistrust is something Vermin feeds off of and they would only use that to their advantage. The other obvious disadvantage here is the numbers game. Che and Sacha would need to add a few more members of Revolution in order to properly take on Vermin.

3. THE STU STONE SOLUTION

Stu_CageM_Online (0;01;25;29)

As much grief as Stu Stone gives, well, everyone who knows him, I have to admit he is pretty crafty when it comes to laying out ring strategy. Perhaps Stu can rebuild up the ranks of The Family Stone and make a charge at Vermin. Perhaps Stu’s tendency to bend the rules a bit would be like fighting fire with fire when it comes to Vermin. With Vermin holding all the titles, they are certainly a target for Stu’s machinations, as he’s all about getting the gold. Unfortunately, Stu seems a little pre-occupied with James “Main Event” Morgan and his war with Othello to be able to marshal forces to go up against Vermin.

4. THE MONSTER SOLUTION

Bateman_C

This one is a little ‘out of the box’ but perhaps that’s just what we need here. For the past several weeks, we’ve watched as Bateman has assembled his Cirque du Monstres. He’s collected three men who haven’t made huge waves here in Hollywood and refocused them into sadistic carnival attractions that frighten just about anyone who looks upon them. Perhaps this is just the weapon we need against Vermin. Unpredictability. No one is quite sure what Bateman’s ultimate goals in CWFH are, but I would love to see him lead his team of Imbécile, Jarek 1:20, and Buffoon in a charge against Vermin. I don’t think Vermin would know what to think.

5. THE UNKNOWN SOLUTION

IMG_3306

Perhaps there’s a combination of wrestlers on the roster who could band together that we just haven’t thought about yet. Timothy Thatcher and Drew Gulak would certainly not shrink away from going toe to toe with Vermin. Recently, the team of Cold Cold World debuted, led by Ceasar B. Black. What a foursome they would make with Thatcher and Gulak! I could see them putting a big hurt on Vermin. And where is Willie Mack in all this? With his experience, I think he would be a great general to lead the charge against Vermin. Or perhaps right now, at the CWFH WrestleCenter, there are some surprises for Vermin that are just waiting to make their big break. I don’t know.

These are several solutions I have come up with. If you have thoughts, let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter. The bottom line is…SOMETHING has to be done about Vermin, and quick!
